SUSTINABILITY

The project aims to improve the transportation infrastructure within the metropolitan area of Kocaeli and to contribute to the socio-economic development of the region. This metro line, which extends along the İzmit–Derince–Körfez corridor in an east–west direction and resembles a narrow, elongated rectangular urban form, will provide maximum accessibility and benefit in terms of serving the highest possible number and density of passengers on a single rail system.

In the 12th Development Plan of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye – Strategy and Budget Presidency, the Transportation section includes the following provision regarding public transportation systems:
“Demand-based policies will be implemented in urban transportation to reduce traffic congestion, accidents, and air pollution; and sustainable, environmentally friendly, efficient, and low-emission public transportation systems and micro-mobility solutions will be encouraged over individual vehicle use.”
The tendered line will contribute to achieving these sectoral objectives.

Upon opening, the project is expected to serve approximately 300,000 passengers per day, with ridership projected to increase to 500,000 in the long term.

The first phase has been designed to complete 27.1 km of the project corridor, including 18 stations between Tüpraş Petkim and İzmit East, the Train Parking area, and a 2.7 km Train Park connection line. The second phase aims to build on the first by completing an additional 8.25 km with 6 stations, bringing all stations into full operation.

The first phase is planned to occupy a key position in Kocaeli’s strategic transportation network. This phase begins at Tüpraş Petkim, passes through the Derince district, traverses the extensive green areas of Millet Bahçesi and Seka Park, and proceeds towards the city center. After reaching the center, it continues to the Kocaeli Intercity Bus Terminal and concludes at İzmit East Station. The production and construction activities under the project will contribute significantly to the national economy.

Furthermore, the procurement of equipment, as well as expenditures related to equipment maintenance, repair, spare parts, fuel, worker food and clothing, general and contingency expenses, will generate economic input across numerous sectors. Consumables and supply needs will largely be met from nearby neighbourhoods and districts. The employment created is expected to reduce the regional unemployment rate and support improvements in income levels, education, healthcare, culture, and local infrastructure.

In conclusion, the project is expected to have both direct and indirect positive impacts on the local and national economy.
